Serviceberry is a small deciduous multi stem tree or large upright shrub, ranging from 10'-25' tall. The beautiful white flowers are the first sign of spring in the Inland Northwest. It tolerates soils that range from moist to dry and coarse to fine. It grows best in areas with more than 12 of annual precipitation, good drainage, and moderate exposure. It s an excellent plant for enhancing wildlife habitat. Highly nutritious berries ripen in mid-late summer and can be eaten raw or used in several recipes including jam and wine. Berries flavor and texture are best when picked sooner rather than later.
