A fast growing, hardy, deciduous shrub that can grow to 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide. Planting often results in large thickets. It is usually found growing in moist soil. It tolerates shade, but prefers sun. Its dense, matting root system makes it useful in stream-side stabilization. It is also an important species for providing forage for wildlife in the winter.
